How to Choose the Perfect Music for Your Wedding: Advice from Professional DJs
Celebrating International DJ Day with Wedding Experts
Music is one of the elements that most influences the atmosphere of a wedding. It can turn an emotional moment into something unforgettable, accompany the key moments of the day, and most importantly, transform the party into a dance floor that stays full until the end of the night.
Choosing the right music for a wedding is not always easy. Every couple has their own musical tastes, but it’s also important to consider the guests, the different age groups and the type of celebration you want to create.
To celebrate International DJ Day on March 9th, we asked several DJs who regularly work at weddings for their best advice when it comes to choosing the music for such an important day. Here are their recommendations.
Chimi Hendrixx
DJ Chimi highlights that weddings usually bring together guests from many different generations: friends, family members, parents, uncles, and sometimes even grandparents. Each group has different musical tastes, so it’s important to think about a musical selection that works for everyone.
A good strategy is to include well-known songs that most people recognize and enjoy, encouraging guests to join the dance floor.
He also mentions that older guests are often the first to leave the party, so including songs they recognize earlier in the evening can help them enjoy the celebration and feel more involved. From there, the music can gradually evolve toward more current styles to keep the energy of the night going.
Jose from Castell de Tamarit
For Jose, a DJ who regularly performs at weddings at Castell de Tamarit, choosing the music largely depends on each couple’s personal taste. However, there is one piece of advice he always shares with couples: try to think about your guests as well.
Although it is your big day and the music should reflect your personality, finding a balance is often the key to making the dance floor work. When different generations hear songs they enjoy, the party naturally becomes more dynamic and inclusive.
Jose also recommends trusting the DJ’s experience. Professional DJs know how to read the dance floor and adapt the music throughout the night to maintain the energy of the party.
Ena’s DJ
This playlist allows them to quickly understand the couple’s musical style and the kind of atmosphere they want to create during their celebration.
If the meeting is in person, they often listen to music together with the couple in their studio to refine the style even further. If it’s an online meeting, they talk about what they would love to hear, what they prefer to avoid, and which moments of the day are most important to them.
Based on that information, they prepare a very dynamic set that combines commercial music that works well on the dance floor with special versions, edits and songs that are not always easy to find on Spotify. They enjoy including songs everyone recognizes while also adding a few surprise moments. Their goal is simple: that the couple feels completely identified with the music and that the dance floor never feels empty.
Iván – Suit&Music
To achieve this, he usually structures the party in three main musical moments. The first part of the night focuses on getting guests onto the dance floor with well-known songs and accessible styles. Once the energy builds, the second block becomes the strongest part of the party, with more upbeat and high-energy music that keeps the dance floor full.
Finally, the celebration moves into the last part of the night, where couples often choose a few special songs to close the party. These final tracks usually have a personal meaning for the couple and their friends, creating a memorable ending for the celebration.
Rich Cabrera
This questionnaire gives him a clear guideline when preparing the musical set. For Richard, it’s important to understand that not all weddings are the same. A Latin wedding, a Spanish wedding or an international wedding can have very different musical dynamics.
For this reason, his goal is always to adapt the music to the type of celebration and the profile of the guests, while making sure the playlist is as danceable as possible so the energy on the dance floor stays high throughout the night.
Christian Pujol
He explains that sometimes one of the partners might have very specific musical tastes, such as techno, but if most of the guests prefer more commercial music or reggaeton, the dance floor may not work if only one style is played all night.
That’s why he recommends creating a varied musical mix. There can absolutely be moments dedicated to the couple’s personal taste, but it is also important to include songs that connect with the majority of guests and help keep the energy high during the party.
The Key to Wedding Music: Balance, Personality and Experience
After speaking with several professional wedding DJs, one thing becomes clear: there is no single formula for choosing the perfect wedding music. Every celebration is different, and every couple has their own musical identity.
However, all of them agree on a few key ideas: finding a balance between the couple’s tastes and their guests’ preferences, trusting the DJ’s professional experience, and creating a varied musical selection that keeps the dance floor alive.
The most important point is that the music connects with everyone, allowing the magic to happen: the dance floor fills up, generations mix together, and the party becomes an unforgettable moment of the day.
